How to Smooth and Finish 3D Prints: A Complete Guide

Fresh off the printer, an FDM 3D print has visible layer lines. That is just the nature of fused deposition modelling — each layer is a thin ribbon of plastic laid on top of the previous one, and the seams between them are always visible. For functional parts like brackets or jigs, layer lines do not matter. But for decorative models, gifts, cosplay props, or anything you want to display, those lines need to go.

Finishing a 3D print is a skill of its own, separate from designing or printing. It takes patience, the right tools, and a methodical approach. But the results are worth it. A properly sanded, primed, and painted 3D print can be indistinguishable from an injection-moulded product.

This guide covers the full workflow from rough print to finished piece. You will learn what tools to buy, which techniques work for each material, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.

What You Will Need

Sanding supplies:

Step 1: Remove Supports and Clean the Print

Before sanding anything, remove all support material from your print. Use flush cutters to snip supports close to the surface, then use a craft knife or small file to remove the nubs. Be careful not to gouge the model — it is better to leave a tiny bump that will be sanded off than to cut into the surface.

Wash the print with warm water and dish soap to remove any dust, grease, or residues from the printing process. Dry it thoroughly. This step is often skipped but it makes a real difference — sanding over a greasy surface clogs the paper instantly.

Step 2: Sanding — Start Rough, Go Fine

Sanding is the most labour-intensive part of the process, but it is also the most important. The principle is simple: start with coarse grit to remove the layer lines, then work gradually finer until the surface is smooth.

Dry Sanding (120–400 grit)

Start with 120 or 180 grit sandpaper to knock down the prominent layer lines. Sand in a circular motion or in the direction of the lines, but avoid pressing too hard — you want to remove the ridges, not reshape the model. Focus on the high spots. You will see the surface turn cloudy and dusty. This is normal.

Once the major lines are gone, move to 220 grit, then 320, then 400. At each stage, spend enough time to remove the scratches from the previous grit. If you rush this, the deeper scratches will still be visible after painting. A good rule: move up a grit only when the surface looks uniformly matte with no visible scratches from the previous paper.

Wet Sanding (600–2000 grit)

Wet sanding uses water as a lubricant to reduce friction and prevent the paper from clogging. Dip the sandpaper in water and sand with light pressure. The water carries away the plastic particles and keeps the surface cool. Wet sanding produces a much finer finish than dry sanding.

Work through 600, 800, 1000, 1500, and finally 2000 grit. By the time you finish with 2000 grit, the surface should feel smooth as glass and have a slight sheen. Wipe the model dry and inspect it under good light. Any remaining scratches or imperfections should be addressed before moving to primer.

Step 3: Apply Filler Primer

Filler primer is a thick spray primer that fills small scratches and surface imperfections. It is the secret weapon of 3D print finishing. A couple of coats of filler primer can save hours of sanding.

  1. Shake the can vigorously for at least two minutes. The filler particles settle quickly.
  2. Spray from 20–25cm away in light, even passes. Do not try to cover everything in one coat — multiple thin coats are better than one thick coat that runs.
  3. Apply 2–3 coats with 10–15 minutes of drying time between each. The primer should visibly fill the remaining layer lines.
  4. Let the primer cure fully. Most filler primers need 24 hours to fully harden. Do not rush this step. Sanding uncured primer is a sticky, frustrating mess.

After the primer has cured, wet sand with 600–800 grit to smooth it out. You will see where the primer has filled gaps and where it has not. If you still see layer lines after sanding, apply another coat of primer and repeat.

Step 4: Priming (The Real Primer Coat)

Filler primer is for filling. After sanding it smooth, you need a standard primer to create an even base for your paint colour. White or grey primer works for most colours. Use white if your final colour is light, grey if it is dark.

Apply 2–3 thin, even coats of primer. Let each coat dry for the time specified on the can (usually 15–30 minutes). After the final coat dries, lightly wet sand with 1000 grit to remove any orange peel texture. The surface should be perfectly smooth and matte.

Step 5: Painting

With a smooth, primed surface, painting becomes straightforward. The paint has a uniform surface to grip, so it goes on evenly without pooling or beading.

Spray Painting

  • Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Place the model on a turntable or a stick (blue-taped to a dowel) so you can rotate it without touching it.
  • Apply paint in thin, even passes from 20–25cm away. It is better to do five thin coats than one thick coat that drips.
  • Wait 10–15 minutes between coats. The paint should feel dry to the touch but not fully cured.
  • Hold the can vertically and sweep across the model. Start spraying before the model and release after — this prevents heavy buildup at the start of the pass.

Brush Painting

  • Use acrylic model paints (like Vallejo or Citadel) for brush painting. Thin the paint with a drop of water or thinning medium — it should be the consistency of milk.
  • Apply multiple thin layers rather than one thick layer. Let each layer dry before applying the next.
  • Use a decent brush. A cheap brush sheds bristles and leaves streaks. A size 2 or 4 round brush covers most needs.

Airbrushing

An airbrush gives the most professional finish with the thinnest paint layers. It takes practice to master, but the results are worth it. Thin your paint to the consistency recommended by the manufacturer (usually 1:1 or 2:1 paint-to-thinner), spray at 15–25 PSI, and build up the colour in light passes.

Step 6: Clear Coat

A clear coat protects the paint and gives the model its final appearance. Choose based on the look you want:

  • Matte clear coat: Reduces glare and gives a natural, non-reflective finish. Best for realistic models, props, and display pieces.
  • Satin clear coat: A subtle sheen that sits between matte and gloss. The most versatile choice for general use.
  • Gloss clear coat: High-shine finish. Best for models that should look wet, polished, or like automotive paint.

Apply the clear coat in the same way as paint — thin, even passes from 20–25cm. Two to three coats is sufficient. Let the clear coat cure for 24–48 hours before handling the model. Clear coats take longer to fully harden than paint.

Alternative Smoothing Methods

Sanding and painting is the most reliable method, but there are alternatives depending on your material and what you are trying to achieve.

Acetone Vapour Smoothing (ABS only)

Acetone vapour smoothing is the fastest way to get a glossy, injection-moulded finish on ABS prints. Place the print on a platform inside a sealed container with a small amount of acetone at the bottom. The acetone evaporates and the vapours slightly dissolve the outer surface of the ABS, melting the layer lines together. After 5–30 minutes (depending on size), remove the print and let it air out.

This only works with ABS. PLA and PETG do not react to acetone. The process requires careful control — too long and the model loses detail; too short and the layer lines remain. It is also mildly hazardous — acetone is flammable and the vapours are strong. Work outdoors or under a fume hood.

Epoxy Coating

Thin epoxy resin (like XTC-3D) can be brushed onto a print to fill layer lines in one coat. It self-levels and cures to a hard, glossy finish. This is faster than sanding but adds thickness, which can obscure fine detail. Best for large, simple shapes like helmets or armour pieces.

Heat Gun or Torch (Use with extreme caution)

Briefly passing a heat gun or torch over the surface of a print can melt the outer layer and smooth lines. This is very easy to overdo — the plastic can blister, warp, or catch fire. Not recommended for beginners or detailed models.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Skipping grits during sanding

Jumping from 120 grit straight to 400 grit leaves deep scratches that the finer paper cannot remove. The scratches only show up after painting. Work through every grit in order. It takes longer but the result is worth it.

Priming on a dirty print

Oils from your hands prevent primer from bonding. Wash the print with soap and water before priming. Wear gloves if you tend to have oily skin.

Spray paint too thick or too close

Holding the can too close or spraying too much in one pass causes runs and drips. The correct distance is 20–25cm. If you see pooling, stop immediately, let it dry, and sand it flat before continuing.

Not letting primer cure fully

Filler primer needs 24 hours to cure. Sanding it too early clogs the paper and leaves a gummy surface. Paint over uncured primer and the paint will crack as the primer continues to shrink. Be patient.

Painting in cold or humid weather

Spray paint behaves poorly below 15°C or above 70% humidity. The paint dries too slowly, collects moisture, and develops a cloudy or blushing finish. Check the weather and paint on a mild, dry day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sand PLA?

Yes. PLA sands very well. It is harder than ABS but responds nicely to sanding. The dust is fine and can irritate the lungs — always wear a respirator. Wet sanding PLA produces a smoother finish with less dust.

Can I sand PETG?

Yes, but PETG is tougher and more flexible than PLA, which makes it slightly harder to sand. It tends to gum up sandpaper if you apply too much pressure. Use high-quality sandpaper and wet sand for best results. PETG also benefits from a good filler primer more than PLA does.

What is the fastest way to smooth a 3D print?

Do I need to sand if I only want to paint?

Can I use wood filler instead of specialised primer?
